Yokohama AVID Touring-S Overview
The Yokohama AVID Touring-S is an all-season grand-touring tire, designed for drivers of sedans, small crossovers, small hatchbacks, compact cars, minivans and coupes.
According to Yokohama, the AVID Touring-S is a well-rounded tire, engineered to deliver top-notch traction in dry and wet conditions, combined with outstanding ride quality.
Compared to most of the other tires in its category, the Yokohama AVID Touring-S comes at a cheaper cost. The problem with most cheap tires is that they tend to be of poor quality.
Fortunately, that’s not the issue with this tire. While it may be cheaper than most of the others in its category, it doesn’t compromise on quality. Simply put, you are getting a high-quality all-season tire, at an affordable cost.
Design Features and Technologies
As noted above, this tire is built to deliver reliable performances all-yea-round. To achieve that level of performance, Yokohama has outfitted it with several key features and technologies such as:
Tri-Plex Rubber Compound
Yokohama has provisioned this tire with a tri-plex rubber compound, which has been formed into a symmetrical tread pattern.
This tread design is built to deliver enhanced traction in different weather conditions while enhancing the tire’s tread life.
Tapered Rubber Insert
The AVID Touring-S also comes with a tapered rubber insert in its tread. This rubber insert plays a vital role in absorbing vibration, bumps and road noise.
So, whether you are driving on smooth surfaces or rough roads, you are assured of a comfortable and smooth ride, as long as your vehicle is provisioned with the Yokohama AVID Touring-S.
Four Circumferential Grooves
Yokohama has further provisioned this tire with four circumferential grooves, featuring tapered water channels.
These two features help in channeling water away from the tire’s surface, thus improving its traction in wet and slippery surfaces.
Twin Rail Rib
The AVID Touring-S also comes with a twin stability rib, spanning its entire circumference around the center of its tread.
This feature plays an important role in enhancing the tire’s steering response while giving it more stability.
Longitudinal Sipes
Apart from the circumferential grooves, this tire also features several longitudinal sipes, which provide additional biting surfaces.
And as a result, you are assured of enhanced stability, grip and outstanding handling in wet and light snowy conditions.
Sturdy Construction
Inside the AVID Touring-S are two steel belts, reinforced with nylon edge strips and polyester plies.
These three features combine to deliver enhanced outstanding strength and durability, as well as high-speed cornering stability.
Performance in Different Conditions
As an all-season touring tire, the Yokohama AVID Touring-S should perform well in almost all weather conditions.
So, is that the case? Well, we mounted a set of this tire on a Nissan Sentra and assessed its performance in different conditions and surfaces. And this is how the AVID Touring-S performed.
Dry Performance
We commenced our tests by assessing this tire’s performance on dry roads and then comparing the results with the others in its class.
And from our tests, we can say without a doubt that its traction and grip on dry surfaces are beyond average.
As much as the Yokohama AVID Touring-S is not a sporty tire, it almost feels like one when you are driving with it on dry roads. With this tire, you can push your vehicle to its limits, and you won’t experience any loss of grip or traction.
However, we noticed a slight loss of traction during high-speed cornering, but not a deal-breaker in any way.
As long as you maintain normal driving speeds, you are assured of a safe driving experience on dry roads.
Wet Performance
After assessing its dry performance, we then proceeded to check how this tire can handle wet conditions. And, it didn’t disappoint.
In wet conditions, the Yokohama AVID Touring-S performed like a proper all-season tire.
It handled wet and slippery surfaces with confidence. With this tire, you can even drive at higher speeds in extremely rainy conditions, and you won’t have to worry about loss of grip or traction. Its braking distances in rainy conditions were also above average.
Overall, the Yokohama AVID Touring-S is more than a capable performer when it comes to wet conditions. Whether you encounter light showers or heavy rain, this tire will always get the job done.
Performance in Snowy Conditions
Most all-season touring tires are poor performers when it comes to snowy conditions and icy roads.
Unfortunately, that’s also the case with the Yokohama AVID Touring-S. According to drivers who have encountered snow-covered and icy roads with this tire, the reviews have been negative.
Simply put, the AVID Touring-S is not engineered to handle snow-covered and icy roads. While it may deliver some traction in light snow, its usefulness in such conditions ends there.
Hence, driving with this tire in these conditions poses a safety risk. And there’s no need for taking such risks.
Therefore, if your area experiences freezing temperatures or heavy snowing during the winter months, then you should simply replace the AVID Touring-S with proper winter tires.
Ride Quality
All-season touring tires are the most comfortable tires currently on the market. They are renowned for delivering a smooth, quiet and comfortable ride on different surfaces and pavements.
And this is also the case with the Yokohama AVID Touring-S. When conducting our tests, this tire remained comfortable all through.
It absorbed bumps and road imperfections with ease. Even larger bumps and big potholes have nothing against this tire.
Furthermore, it remained supremely quiet all through. While it may produce some road noise when you are driving at higher speeds, the noise is not excessive or annoying. Unlike some of the other tires in this category, the AVID Touring-S will not interrupt your music or conversations in your car, thanks to its quiet ride.
So, if you are looking for an all-season touring tire for your daily commutes, then the Yokohama AVID Touring-S comes highly recommended. It will also be a great choice for those long road trips, where comfort is a priority.
Warranties and Guarantees
Yokohama stands behind this tire with a standard limited warranty, uniformity warranty and a limited treadwear warranty. The Yokohama AVID Touring-S also comes with a 30-day customer satisfaction guarantee. Let’s take a closer look at what each of these warranties and guarantees cover.
Standard Limited Warranty
Yokohama’s standard limited warranty is designed to protect you against loss if your tire becomes unserviceable due to workmanship or materials defects.
Under this warranty, Yokohama promises to replace your AVID Touring-S tire, if it’s removed from service due to materials or workmanship issues.
If the tire becomes unserviceable due to workmanship or materials defects during its first 2/32-inch of the original usable tread, Yokohama will replace it with a comparable new tire, free of charge.
Yokohama will also take care of the tire’s mounting and balancing charges while the buyer will be responsible for other service charges like tire alignment, rotation, and applicable taxes.
If the tire is removed from service when more than 2/32-inch of its original usable tread is worn, Yokohama will replace it on a prorated basis.
With the prorated replacement, you will pay a certain percentage of the tire’s replacement costs.
An authorized Yokohama tire dealer will determine your replacement charge by multiplying the percentage of the original usable tread worn off the tire with its current selling price.
You will also be responsible for the tire’s mounting and balancing costs, as well as applicable taxes and miscellaneous service fees.
Coverage under this warranty runs for five years from the tire’s purchase date or six years from its manufacture – in case proof of purchase is not available.
Warranty Exclusions
As much as Yokohama promises to replace your AVID Touring-S tire if it’s removed from service due to workmanship or materials defects, some tires may not be eligible for this replacement.
According to Yokohama, if a tire becomes unserviceable due to damage caused by road hazard injuries, improper repairs, improper application, improper inflation, improper mounting and dismounting as well as mechanical irregularities, then it’s not eligible to be replaced under this warranty.
Also, if the tire’s removed from service due to weather cracking, corrosion, vandalism, accident, damage caused by nature or fire will not be replaced under this warranty.
Furthermore, Yokohama will not replace tires with external treatment or added material after leaving the factory such as sealants, fillers, or balancing substances, if they become unserviceable before wearing out.
Hence, if your tire falls under any of the above categories, then Yokohama will not replace it, regardless of when it becomes unserviceable.
Limited Treadwear Warranty
The Yokohama AVID Touring-S comes with a 65,000-mile limited treadwear warranty. Under this warranty, if this tire wears down to its treadwear indicators without attaining the warranted mileage, Yokohama will replace it with a comparable new one.
But unlike the standard limited warranty, Yokohama doesn’t offer free tire replacement under this warranty. Instead, all replacements are entirely done on a prorated basis.
Therefore, you will pay a percentage of the tire’s replacement costs, depending on the mileage the tire has delivered.
An authorized Yokohama tire dealer will determine your prorated charge by multiplying the percentage of the mileage the tire has delivered by its current selling price.
Besides the replacement charge, you will also pay for the tire’s mounting and balancing charges, in addition to applicable taxes and other service charges.
Coverage under the limited treadwear warranty runs for 60 months from the tire’s date of mounting.
Uniformity Warranty
Yokohama also stands behind this tire with a uniformity warranty. Under this warranty, Yokohama commits to replacing your AVID Touring-S tire, if it causes excessive ride disturbance and vibration, due to uniformity-related issues.
It’s important to note that Yokohama will only replace this tire if these issues occur within its first 2/32-inch of its original usable tread.
Hence, if you encounter uniformity-related issues outside this window, your tire will not be eligible to be replaced under this warranty.
Customer Satisfaction Guarantee
As earlier mentioned, the Yokohama AVID Touring-S also comes with a 30-day customer satisfaction guarantee.
So, if you purchase this tire, Yokohama gives you a 30-day window to assess its performance and decide whether to keep it or not.
If you opt against keeping this tire, you are free to return it where you purchased it and the dealer will offer you a refund or replacement.
But to get the refund, the tire shouldn’t have any noticeable damage or failure. Also, it shouldn’t be worn by more than 1/32-inch of its original usable tread.
