Well, all the information that you require is available in the owner’s manual for your vehicle, on the driver’s side door jamb, on the glove box, on the gas tank hatch, or on the tire itself.

Assuming that your current tires are the proper size, you can easily find the data in a string of letters and numbers on the sidewall of your tires. You, however, have to know how to interpret what each number and letter stands for.

Let’s use the following tire size as an example: P225/70R16 91S.

Now, let’s decipher each of these letters and numbers and what they stand for. This brief video shows how to read the tire size numbers:

Tire Type

The tire type is generally the first letter in the code. Its main aim is to tell you what class of tire it is. In most cases, you’ll see the letter “P”. This letter stands for “P-metric” which essentially refers to tires that are designed to a particular standard within the United States. They’re intended for passenger vehicles including cars, crossovers, SUVs, minivans, and light-duty pickup trucks.

You can also find tires beginning with the letters “LT” instead of “P”. This stands for “LT-metric” which means that the tires are designed for “Light Trucks”. These types of tires are designed to be used in vehicles that can tow trailers or have a load capacity of ¾ to 1 ton.

You might also come across tires beginning with “T”. This stands for “Temporary” and is generally found in spare tires. There’s also “ST”, which stands for “Special Trailer”. These types of tires are meant for trailers including boat trails, fifth wheels, utility trailers, and other travel trailers.

Width

Also known as the section width, the width is the first 3-digit number that appears following the letter(s). It is in millimeters and refers to the size of your tire from side to side if you’re looking at the tire from the front. In other words, it’s measured from the outer sidewall to the inner sidewall.

From the above example, the tire has a measurement of “P225”, which basically means that this tire is for a passenger vehicle and has a width of 225 millimeters.

Aspect Ratio

The tire’s aspect ratio is the next number that follows the slash mark. It’s usually a two-digit number that shows how tall your tire’s profile is. An aspect ratio is generally delivered in percentage and is calculated by dividing the tire’s height off the rim by the width of the tire.

As such, a bigger aspect ratio means that the tire has a higher or taller sidewall. On the other hand, a vehicle with a lower aspect ratio such as 60% means that the tires can offer excellent and better handling performance than higher aspect ratio tires.

From our example, the aspect ratio of the tire is 70.

Construction

The construction of the tire is deciphered by a single letter that follows the aspect ratio. There are two types of tire construction:

• R – Radial
• D – Diagonal or Bias Ply

A vast majority of tires that are used in the U.S. are radial tires because they’re the industry standard for most tires today and that’s why you’ll see most tires with the “R” designation. Radial construction typically means that the internal ply cords of the tire are designed in a radial direction and are perpendicular to the direction of travel or the axis of rotation.

Radial tires are popular because they offer better road grip, low rolling resistance, comfortable ride, lower gas mileage, and are durable.

Differently, tires with a diagonal or bias ply construction are built with diagonal or crisscrossing ply cords. Also known as x-ply or conventional tires, these tires are commonly found in trailer or motorcycle tires.

Rim Diameter

The next number after the construction letter is the rim diameter. It’s generally known as the middle number in the tire size. It’s in inches and is meant to designate the rim onto which the tire should be mounted. It’s usually a 2-digit number and shows how wide the wheel should be. For our example, it means that the tire should be mounted on a rim with a 16-inch diameter.

The most common rim diameters are 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22.

Load Index

Load index is the 2-digit number that follows the rim diameter. It indicates the maximum load that the tire can comfortably support when the tire is properly inflated as recommended by the manufacturer.

The load index is in pounds and corresponds to the specific load capacity listed in an index and usually ranges from 65 to 150. In our example, the tire has a load index of 91, which means that the tire has a maximum load capacity of 1,356 pounds.

Speed Rating

The final letter in the series shows the speed rating of the tire. This indicates the maximum speed at which it’s safe to travel on the tires. In our example, the tire has a speed rating of “S”. This means that it’s rated for up to 112 mph. It can, therefore, handle heat better and provide more control at faster speeds.

On the other hand, a tire with a speed rating of “R” can attain up to 106 mph and it’s not perfect for top speeds. All in all, it’s always safe to adhere to the legal speed limits of the roadways.

What if there’s no Letter Before Tire Size?

If your tire has no letter before the first number, it means that you are using a tire with a metric system popularly known as the European size. Such a tire can be measured in millimeters and may have a different load capacity than an LT or P tire.
