In this case, you will need a vehicle that has sufficient ground clearance, dependable underbody protection, as well as a powerful drivetrain, which can comfortably handle aggressive terrains.
Also, you will need a proper set of mud terrain tires. Regardless of how powerful your vehicle is, if you don’t have the right set of mud terrain tires, you will find it extremely hard to get your vehicle through. And, it’s highly likely you will end up being stuck out there – which can be an unpleasant experience.
Fortunately, the tire industry has numerous tire models for this class. Whether you are looking for a premium, mud terrain tire or you need a budget option, your options are almost endless. Today, we will take a closer look at one of the tire models in this category. And this tire is none other than the Starsail Mud Champ.
About the Starsail Mud Champ
The Starsail Mud Champ is an all-season mud terrain tire, specifically built for off-roading enthusiasts or drivers who tackle challenging terrains and rugged surfaces filled with rock, gravel and slush.
It’s worth mentioning that budget tire shoppers are this tire’s main target market. So, if you are in the market for an affordable mud terrain tire for your truck or SUV, then this tire is worth a look.
Design Features and Technologies
The Starsail Mud Champ is built to deliver outstanding off-roading capabilities. According to the manufacturer, this tire should confidently handle the most rugged off-road terrains, including thick mud, gravel, soft sand, hard-packed surfaces and loose dirt. To this end, the manufacturer has outfitted it with numerous features and technologies so that it can confidently handle these terrains and conditions. Some of the tire’s standout features and technologies include:
Aggressive Tread Pattern
The main feature of this tire is its aggressive tread pattern. This aggressive tread pattern is designed to improve the tire’s off-road traction. As a result, you can expect this tire to deliver great performances on mud, slush, and snow-covered surfaces.
Over the Shoulder Treads
The Starsail Mud Champ also sports over-the-shoulder treads. These shoulder treads are designed to boost the tire's traction, especially in deep muddy conditions and snow. They will supply extra forward traction, making it easier to pull the vehicle through, while reducing the chances of getting stuck.
Also, these over-the-shoulder blocks play a secondary role in enhancing the tire’s durability and sturdiness.
Open Tread Blocks
If you take a closer look at the Starsail Mud Champ, you will notice that it comes with deep, open tread blocks. So, what’s the purpose of this feature? Well, these deep tread blocks help to boost the tire’s self-cleaning capabilities.
They will disperse slush and mud from the tread when it’s in motion, ensuring it will maintain constant road contact. Also, these open tread blocks will help to enhance the tire’s mud traction.
Three-Ply Polyester Casing
Mud-terrain tires should be durable and tough. And this is also the case with the Starsail Mud Champ. It features a three-ply polyester casing as well as a reinforced internal structure.
These two features help to boost the tire’s sturdiness, making it resistant to punctures, among other forms of damage. Also, they will help to boost the tire’s longevity, meaning you won’t need to replace it prematurely.
Performance in Different Conditions
As a mud terrain tire, the Starsail Mud Champ is expected to deliver top-notch performances in muddy conditions and loose dirt. It’s also expected to behave well over dry tarmac and wet, slippery surfaces.
But does it perform as expected? Can you depend on this tire to get the job done? Well, mounted a set of the Starsail Mud Champ on a Jeep Wrangler and decided to put it to the test.
We examined its off-roading performance, dry performance, wet performance, and performance in snowy conditions. We also assessed its overall ride quality. And after conducting a series of these tests, we observed the following.
Dry Performance
For our tests, we decided to visit a local forest park, where off-roading vehicles are allowed. And as we headed there, we had enough time to evaluate this tire’s performance on dry roads.
As much as the Starsail Mud Champ is not built for street or highway driving, it still managed to deliver usable traction. However, there was a noticeable loss of traction once we started moving at highway speeds.
In conclusion, you will get usable traction on dry roads with this tire, as long as you don’t push your truck or SUV too hard.
Wet Performance
We also had an opportunity to assess this tire’s performance on wet paved roads. And, its performance in these conditions was underwhelming. Even when we were driving at slow to moderate speeds, this tire lacked sufficient traction.
The reason why its wet performance is poor can be attributed to the fact that it lacks micro sipes, which help to provide biting edges on wet and slippery surfaces. Therefore, the braking distances will be long, while the handling and steering responsiveness will be equally poor.
As much as its hydroplaning resistance is great, we could feel it struggling to grip the road surface. To this end, we concluded that this tire can’t deliver a dependable and safe driving experience in rainy conditions.
Off-Road Performance
Off-roading enthusiasts and drivers who encounter challenging terrains purchase mud terrain tires for one main reason. And this is to get the maximum traction possible to tackle these terrains. So, is this the case with the Starsail Mud Champ?
Without a doubt, the Starsail Mud Champ is a dependable performer when it comes to off-road conditions. We first drove through thick mud, to determine how it could handle such conditions.
And, we weren’t disappointed. It drove through thick mud effortlessly, like a hot knife slicing through butter. Its outstanding performance in thick mud can be attributed to its deep treads and shoulder blocks. These features enabled the tire to dig in and pull the Wrangler through.
After evaluating its performance in deep, thick mud, we then proceed to see how it can handle loose sand and dirt. Again, it didn’t disappoint. It delivers sufficient grip and traction all through.
Its rock-crawling performance was also great. However, we also noticed that the Starsail Mud Champ comes with a softer rubber compound, compared to the competition.
Therefore, if used for crawling large rocks, there’s a high chance of damage or premature wear and tear.
Performance in Snowy Conditions
Most of the mud terrain tires that we’ve tested have performed admirably in light snowy conditions. And this was also the case with the Starsail Mud Champ. It delivered sufficient grip and traction, thanks to its aggressive tread pattern. As much as this tire may not be a dedicated snow or winter tire, the traction it delivers on snow-covered roads is adequate for safe driving.
But on ice, the situation is completely different. We noticed the traction was almost non-existent when driving through ice-covered surfaces. Consequently, the braking distances remained long and the vehicle kept skidding sideways, even when driving at low speeds. Simply put, this tire cannot guarantee safe driving on ice-covered roads.
Ride Quality
Mud terrain tires are not designed for everyday driving. And as you may expect, they may deliver a refined driving experience. Unfortunately, this is also the situation with the Starsail Mud Champ.
On paved roads, this tire is extremely uncomfortable. It doesn’t absorb bumps, potholes and other surface imperfections. Also, the noise coming from the tires is extremely high. Also, you can feel the vibrations in the cabin.
But, considering its aggressive tread pattern and the large, deep tread blocks, these issues are much expected. So, if you are shopping for a mud terrain tire that can combine a dependable off-road performance with a comfortable on-road ride, then the Starsail Mud Champ is not the one for you. In this regard, you should explore other options.
Damage Resistance
Rugged, off-road terrains are filled with abrasive elements and materials like sharp rocks, logs, and sticks. And, these elements can damage the tire and shorten its service life.
To this end, off-road and mud-terrain tires should be adequately equipped, to resist any form of damage. Fortunately, the manufacturers of the Starsail Mud Champ didn’t skip on this important area.
As earlier mentioned, the Starsail Mud Champ sports a reinforced and sturdy structure. This reinforced and sturdy construction is designed to prevent tire belt separation, especially when you are tackling large rocks.
It also comes with large and deep tread blocks. These tread blocks help to resist stone retention, thus preventing stone drilling, which can cause punctures and severe damage. Hence, you won’t have to worry about your tires getting punctured or wearing out prematurely.
Starsail Mud Champ Warranty
Due to the nature of the driving conditions that mud terrain tires are subjected to, most of their manufacturers don’t offer warranties. And this is also the case with the Starsail Mud Champ. We couldn’t find any warranty that has been offered for this tire, be it a manufacturer’s warranty or treadwear warranty.
Sizes and Fitment
The Starsail Mud Champ is available in several sizes. The sizes available on the market range between 16 inches and 20 inches. Without a doubt, this tire can fit the majority of trucks and SUVs used for off-road driving. Here are some of the vehicles that the Starsail Mud Champ is compatible with:

Verdict
As much as the Starsail Mud Champ may not be as fancy as some of the other tires in its class are, it gets the job done. It will provide adequate grip and traction, needed when driving through adverse terrains. Also, it’s solidly built, meaning it can withstand the abrasive elements found in rugged terrains. The only issue with this tire is that its street performance is poor. But considering its price range, you can’t ask much from this tire. Overall, it will be a great choice for drivers who need an affordable but dependable mud terrain or off-road terrain tire.
