What Does the Engine & Transmission Offers?
The power and performance of a car is the primary concern when buying a new car. But the BMW M4's drivetrain leaves no reason for you not to buy this car. BMW introduced the 3-liter, twin-turbocharged forced induction engine underneath the hood in the M4.
This engine is truly a beast that produces 425 horsepower and 406 ft-lbs of peak torque. But we would recommend the competition version which is more powerful and better in all ways. The competition version offers a bumped-up horsepower to 444.
The M4 2020 comes with an in-line six-cylinder engine that BMW is famous for making. So engine reliability is a top advantage you can get from this car.
Due to a forced-induction engine, the car produces a quick acceleration, resulting in 0-60 mph in just 3.8 seconds with the seven-speed double-clutch transmission.
You can also get a six-speed manual transmission M4 which is slightly slower but more fun to drive like all manuals are.
Is the 2020 BMW M4 Fuel Efficient?
BMW M4's fuel economy is 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. You would expect more from this car as it is a six-cylinder. However, it is essential to remember that the M4 is a rear-wheel drive that provides significantly more power but consumes a lot more fuel.
Moreover, this fuel economy is of its convertible competition version that weighs 4,000 pounds with a heavy metal roof. You can ditch the metal roof for an optional fabric one.
On the other hand, the coupe version weighs 3,500 pounds and provides you with a couple of units better with the mileage.
Exterior - What Does the M4 Look Like?
We have to start this section by praising the kidney grills of the 2020 M4 that are surprisingly good-looking and proportional. The front grill is an aspect the BMW has struggled to get right since the M3 models, even though it is their trademark.
They have tried several shapes and sizes since the 1980s. The grills received the highest criticism for the second generation of M4, starting from 2021. Fortunately, the first generation has pretty decent-looking grills that do not degrade the look of this car.
Besides that, the M4 has Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) headlights with LED running lights giving the car a modern look compared to the traditional angel eyes. A significant difference between the coupe and the competition package is its wheels.
The standard coupe trim has an 18-inch wheel compared to the 20-inch wheel in the competition package. Although users initially thought the 18-inch wheels were better looking and lighter. However, they soon came around after the competition package made its place in the market.
The tires in the competition package are more low profile to increase overall performance. The tires measure 265/30 in the front and 285/30 at the rear. Inside the wheel, you get beefy M sport brakes with a BMW Blue caliper and 15 inches rotor in the front and 14 inches on the rear. These specifications are specialized to provide superior handling and responsiveness, so you have complete control over your ride.
The designers have done an applaudable job with the overall design of the M4. Unlike some cars with contrasting designs from the front to the back, the M4 has a complimenting design throughout the car. The trunk is slightly lifted, which looks less of a spoiler. In comparison to the coupe version, the spoiler is more profound.
This is because the convertible needs room for the roof. You can fit a piece of large luggage along with two to three small pieces of luggage inside the trunk. If you drop down the stacker, you'll have less space for large luggage pieces, but it lets you keep valuables separated.
What Is the Interior Like?
This car's interior is a rare aspect that left the customers wanting more. The car could've accomplished more with different trims and types of vinyl. However, it still offers a luxurious interior with many options for comfort and safety.
Luckily, BMW offers three two-tone interior options — Sonoma Beige, Silverstone, and Sakhir Orange — to spice things up a bit. The coupe version seats have gaps between them that give a dynamic look.
In comparison, the competition version doesn't have the gaps, making them more supportive and comfortable, contributing to a better driving position for spirited monitoring.
The thigh support comes out for increased comfort - a heavenly feature for long hauling.
The neck warmer is a unique feature of this car. Mercedes-Benz originally introduced it, but BMW was quick to include it in their luxury cars which works amazingly.
The steering wheel comes with a typical BMW hand-stitched cover, and the wheel itself is thick that feels good in the hands.
While we are at the steering wheel, let's not forget the multi-functional buttons and levers that make driving this car extremely fun. The paddle shifters have a metal back that functions subtly. You can control the entertainment acceptance or decline phone calls from the steering.
Besides that, you can choose between different driving modes from normal to sports plus, all at your fingertips.
Moving on to the dashboard of the 2020 BMW M4, it features a traditional yet modern-looking gauge cluster that is analog in the top half and shows digital information in the bottom half.
A notable feature of this car is the head-up display. Unlike other expensive and luxury cars, BMW has placed the head-up display nicely, not compromising your vision.
As mentioned earlier, 2020 is the best year of the BMW M4 2nd generation because it has the latest and upgraded features proving the best value for your money. One of the things updated is the infotainment screen that measures 10.2 inches instead of an 8.8-inch previously.
Moreover, it contains upgraded software, providing more options for infotainment and media, also more compatible with your phone. Besides that, the interface is clean and nicely laid with a sensitive touchscreen.
Apple CarPlay integration, SiriusXM satellite radio, Wi-Fi, Hotspot, and a 16-speaker 600-watt Harman/Kardon audio system are some features included in the infotainment system.
A classy-looking carbon-fiber piece covers the dashboard, giving it a luxurious look. Other features on the dashboard include A/C control, climate control, traction control, and more.
The gear fits nicely in your hand, and it works differently since it doesn't have a park button. However, the system feels more complicated to some users than the traditional one.
Since the M4 is a two-door car, you can go to the back seat by pulling the latch on the front seat to tilt it forward. But that's not it. It wouldn't feel too luxurious if the passengers squeezed through the seat and the door to go through the back.
The front seat has an electrical motor that pulls the seat forward or backward to create space so the passengers can easily enter the car. You can activate this by the button integrated on the side of the front seat.
There is ample room in the interior, whether in the front or the back. Besides that, a couple of features provide luxury to the back seat passengers. There is a 12-volt outlet so that you can plug in your phone or any electronic device.
Other features include cupholders and two-zone climate control. Unfortunately, the car lacks an armrest in the rear, but you can buy it as an additional option.
Overall, the interior of this car is sleek and sorted and combines several specifications to provide comfort and luxury. It lacks some aspects and features that make the interior inferior to its other close competitors. However, it is sufficient and not overly cluttered with controls.
What's It's Like to Drive the 2020 BMW M4
The first feature that is important to drive the car is the key. Like all luxury cars, it has a remote key, but you will have to adjust your expectations because it is not luxurious.
However, the driving experience makes up for this minor inconvenience. The hood drops off before blocking your vision so you can drive comfortably without extending your head over to see the road.
The 2020 BMW M4 offers 360-degree blind-spot monitoring, rearview camera, front view camera, front parking sensor, and rear parking sensor. These features help the driver in driving the car with spot-on visibility. Remember that M4 comes in a convertible model. So once the top is off, there are zero problems as far as the visibility goes.
As we mentioned earlier, you can select different driving modes from comfort, sport, and sport plus modes. The exhaust will be more audible if you drive in sports or sports plus mode with the top off. In comparison, the comfort mode is more silent and fuel-efficient.
Driving this car feels like you have complete control over a super-fast car. Some users have complained about the overwhelmingly fast speed that shifts you into panic mode. However, how you want your car to feel is your preference. Nonetheless, M4 is quick with smooth transmissions and super comfortable.
What Is the Safety Rating for the 2020 BMW M4?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have not rated the 2020 BMW M4 for safety. This model only has two recalls, the least amount for the M4 first generation. However, both versions of the BMW M4 have several features to make this car safe and reliable.
These include the driving assistance features mentioned previously: blind-spot monitoring, rear, and front view cameras, rear and front collision sensors, lane departure warning, and more. Of course, not all features are included in the standard package, but you can get some as additional features.
