At what point of off-road driving should you make the switch to an all-terrain tire? Should you stick with a highway-terrain tire for better road-driving and long tread life warranties? When it comes to the Ford Super Duty, should you get all-terrain tires instead of highway-terrain tires?
We’ll start off with this — the Ford Super Duty comes straight from the factory with all-terrain tires on it in the Michelin LTX A/T2. That said, you don’t have to stick with all-terrain tires if you know you’ll never be doing any off-road driving. But if you ever have to take your Super Duty off-road, for work, for fun, or for both, then we do suggest going with all-terrain tires. They can be used on- and off-road, whereas highway-terrain tires are not designed for both.
That said, highway-terrain tires can certainly be used for an occasional off-road drive on a dirt or gravel road, such as perhaps to visit a job site or something like that. But for consistent off-road driving, we suggest going with an all-terrain. If you’re not, you might not need to invest in a set of all-terrain tires. Many Super Duty trucks never drive off-road throughout their entire lives. So are highway-terrain tires really the best option for most Ford Super Duty drivers?
Even with everything said above, the truth is that the vast majority of Ford Super Duty drivers don’t need an all-terrain tire. Most Ford Super Duty trucks are not ever taken off-road, and people just buy them because they’re great trucks and they can haul a lot of weight behind them. The biggest difference is their maximum load capacity. Ford Super Duty tire sizes are preceded with “LT”, which indicates that they are for trucks and are Load Range E tires. This extra capacity enables the Super Duty to haul what its drivetrain was built to, far exceeding the Ford F-150.
While the load capacities of the tires are quite different, it isn’t the only thing that differentiates the tires between the two types of Ford trucks. These Load Range E tires also require much more air pressure to be used correctly. In most Ford Super Duty trucks, you’ll set the pressure in the rear tires to 80 psi and the front tires to 55 psi. In the F-150, all four tires will typically be set at 35 psi. While you could put Load Range E tires on your F-150, you don’t really need to. And you definitely don’t want to put standard-load tires on your Ford Super Duty!
